Barometric pressure refers to the force exerted by air molecules on the Earth's surface. This atmospheric pressure is dynamic and fluctuates with changes in temperature, weather conditions, and elevation.

In meteorology and aviation, barometric pressure is typically reported as mean sea-level pressure (QNH). This standardized value compensates for elevation differences, ensuring consistency in readings regardless of location. At higher altitudes, where air density decreases, barometric pressure drops significantly, influencing weather patterns and flight dynamics.

Modern barometric pressure measurement relies on absolute pressure sensors equipped with diaphragm technology and an integrated reference vacuum for precision. Historically, mercury column gauges were used for this purpose, offering reliable measurements. However, due to safety concerns and environmental hazards, the use of mercury gauges has been largely discontinued or banned in most countries.

Barometric pressure remains a critical metric, not only for weather forecasting and aviation but also for understanding broader atmospheric dynamics.
